Cinnabar Moth Caterpillars

Wild About Britain - Wild About Britain's - Wild Gallery - Cinnabar Moth Caterpillars - Tyria jacobaeae: "Cinnabar Moth Caterpillars"
I was so excited to find these in the garden, I was called out to look at a grasshopper and the children had already seen these and not thought to mention it!

Um, why is that exciting? Only we've got quite literally hundreds of the things, as we've ragwort all over the place.

erm, right yes, Elaine told me today the caterpillars were poisonous, from the ragwort. Stll not sure if theyre poisonous to humans- I wasnt planning on eating any, anyway. I knew ragwort is poisonous to cattle and you're not supposed to let it grow, but we only have this one patch which has appeared. Theyre called boholons in Ireland- (dont know how to spell that).
I was excited because they seemed so well, exotic, as they are so colourful, and suddenly appeared next to the washing line. The children werent so impressed as they've obviously seen them before.
