how to crochet bootees
These are the first thing I've crocheted since I was 9 or 10, when my grandma was alive. I used to go to her house after school and she would teach me to knit squares and crochet granny squares. She used to crochet me ponchos (more of which later) and shawls and hairbands and knit jumpers. I don't really remember anything else about her, except one day she walked to our house (3 miles) when I was home (alone) from school, and made me some soup.
Instructions
I got the basic idea from a book called 'The Children's Year', but really had to make it up as I went along.
These are pretty vague, but next time I will write down the details- that way I may get 2 the same size!
1. Draw round foot on paper. fold paper in half and cut out so you have 2 templates.
2. Cut 2 soles. For soles I used a chamois leather, glued (pva) to a bit of old felted jumper, for the inside.
3. Blanket stitch around sole, keeping sts evenly spaced. Use contrasting wool and darning needle.
4. Treble crochet into each st around sole, decreaseing at toe end. I used DK pure wool. (undyed jacob wool from British Breeds gives marled/humbug effect).
5. In each of the 1st 5 rows, treble crochet around, decreasing at front half of foot, by working into every other stitch.
6. Make sure you end up with a gap big enough to get foot into. you can try it on at this stage.
7. The last 2 rows are worked straight up. you can turn at the centre front and go back and forwards to get a turn-over edge.
8. Thread 1/4" elastic into lst row of foot part (5th row)
A wears these all the time and they have not worn out yet, even though he crawls aroung everywhere, especially the stone kitchen floor. I have another pair, with sheepskin soles, cut from some old bootees that I had bought for F, and the crochet part was tattered and torn beyond all redemption. They have Ties instead of elastic, made from contrasting wool, made into a single chain.
Next: how to type whilst feeding on the right breast: First take a large cushion......
I must add some links. but how to???

They look lovely. I've never had a go at crocheting, but would like to try. I've heard good reviews about The Children's Year on the Waldorf lists I'm a member of.
Re. links, in 'create post' check you're on the edit html tab and then write as html:
in < > write a href="http://whatever the link is" (including the speech marks) then write the name of it then write in < > /a
Hopefully that makes sense as i have a feeling if I wrote it all out it would come out as a link and be of no help.
Oh, I'm rather tempted to try those, how long did they take you? Make rather nice slippers I think, although I'll have to have a think about the soles. Looking forward to hearing about the ponchos too - I've got wool and a crochet hook, and I've found a number of patterns, but I haven't been convinced enough to give it a go so far.
